Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch seine Emmy-nominierte Darstellung von Franklin D. Roosevelt im Fernsehen, bei jüngeren Generationen durch seine Rolle als Richard Gilmore in „Gilmore Girls“, als allgegenwärtiger Sprecher historischer Sendungen auf dem History Channel und als Werbefigur für Dodge-Automobile in den 1990er-Jahren.
