Isaac Hayes (*20. August 1942 in Covington, Tennessee; † 10. August 2008 in Memphis, Tennessee) war ein US-amerikanischer Soulmusiker, Komponist und Schauspieler. Er gilt als eine der einflussreichsten Figuren des Soul und prägte die Entwicklung von Disco, Rap und urbaner Musik. Hayes begann seine Karriere als Session-Musiker bei Stax Records, wo er mit Künstlern wie Otis Redding und Sam & Dave arbeitete. Gemeinsam mit David Porter schrieb er zahlreiche Hits, darunter "Soul Man" und "Hold On, I’m Coming". Sein erstes Soloalbum "Presenting Isaac Hayes" (1967) war kommerziell wenig erfolgreich, doch mit "Hot Buttered Soul" (1969) gelang ihm der Durchbruch. 1971 komponierte er den Soundtrack zu "Shaft", dessen Titelsong ihm einen Oscar, einen Golden Globe und mehrere Grammys einbrachte. Sein extravagantes Auftreten mit glattrasiertem Kopf, Sonnenbrille und Goldketten machte ihn zu einer Ikone der afroamerikanischen Kultur. Neben seiner Musikkarriere war Hayes auch als Schauspieler aktiv. Er spielte in Filmen wie "Escape from New York" (1981) und "I’m Gonna Git You Sucka" (1988). Zudem war er in Serien wie Miami Vice, Das A-Team und Stargate – Kommando SG-1 zu sehen. Später wurde er durch seine Rolle als Chef in der Zeichentrickserie "South Park" (1997–2006) bekannt. Hayes engagierte sich stark für Bürgerrechte und wurde 1992 in Ghana zum Ehrenkönig gekrönt. 2002 wurde er in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen. Trotz gesundheitlicher Probleme blieb er bis zu seinem Tod aktiv in der Musik- und Filmbranche.
