Warren Mercer Oates war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler, der vor allem durch seine Auftritte in mehreren Filmen von Sam Peckinpah bekannt wurde, darunter The Wild Bunch (1969) und Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974). Eine weitere seiner am meisten gefeierten Rollen war die des Offiziers Sam Wood in In der Hitze der Nacht (1967). Oates spielte in den frühen 1970er Jahren in zahlreichen Filmen mit, die seitdem Kultstatus erlangten, wie The Hired Hand (1971), Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Cockfighter (1974) und Race with the Devil (1975). Oates spielte auch John Dillinger in dem Biopic Dillinger (1973) und in der Nebenrolle des US Army Sergeant Hulka in der Militärkomödie Stripes (1981). Ein weiterer bemerkenswerter Auftritt war der im neuseeländischen Filmklassiker Sleeping Dogs (1977), in dem er den Befehlshaber der amerikanischen Streitkräfte im Land spielte.
