James „Jimmy“ Maitland Stewart (* 20. Mai 1908 in Indiana, Pennsylvania; † 2. Juli 1997 in Beverly Hills, Kalifornien) war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler, der als einer der erfolgreichsten Stars der Filmgeschichte gilt. Zwischen 1934 und 1991 hatte Stewart fast 100 Film- und Fernsehauftritte. Seinen Durchbruch erreichte er Ende der 1930er-Jahre durch Frank Capras Komödien Lebenskünstler und Mr. Smith geht nach Washington. Stewart verkörperte meistens den leicht unsicheren, bodenständigen und oftmals idealistischen „Durchschnitts-Amerikaner“, etwa als George Bailey im Weihnachtsklassiker Ist das Leben nicht schön?. Ab den 1950er-Jahren spielte er zunehmend auch Charakterrollen mit düsteren Facetten, darunter in den Western von Anthony Mann und John Ford. Mit Alfred Hitchcock drehte Stewart die Filmklassiker Cocktail für eine Leiche, Der Mann, der zuviel wußte, Das Fenster zum Hof und Vertigo – Aus dem Reich der Toten; die beiden letztgenannten gehören zu den bedeutendsten Kriminalfilmen der Filmgeschichte. 1941 gewann er den Oscar als bester Hauptdarsteller für die Screwball-Komödie Die Nacht vor der Hochzeit, außerdem erhielt er 1985 einen Ehrenoscar.
