John Farrell MacDonald (6. Juni 1875 – 2. August 1952) war ein US-amerikanischer Charakterdarsteller und Regisseur. Er spielte Nebenrollen und gelegentlich auch Hauptrollen. In seiner 41-jährigen Karriere von 1911 bis 1951 wirkte er in über 325 Filmen mit und führte zwischen 1912 und 1917 bei 44 Stummfilmen Regie. MacDonald war der Hauptregisseur von L. Frank Baums Oz Film Manufacturing Company und ist häufig in Filmen von Frank Capra, Preston Sturges und insbesondere John Ford zu sehen. Zu Beginn seiner Karriere trat MacDonald als Sänger in Minstrel-Shows auf und tourte zwei Jahre lang mit Bühnenproduktionen durch die Vereinigten Staaten. Seinen ersten Stummfilm drehte er 1911, einen dramatischen Kurzfilm mit dem Titel „Der scharlachrote Buchstabe“, der von Carl Laemmles Independent Moving Pictures Company (IMP), dem Vorläufer von Universal Pictures, produziert wurde. Von da an wirkte er jedes Jahr in zahlreichen Filmen mit und führte ab 1912 auch Regie. Sein Regiedebüt gab er mit dem dramatischen Kurzfilm „The Worth of a Man“, erneut für IMP. Bis zu seinem letzten Film „Over the Fence“ im Jahr 1917, den er gemeinsam mit Harold Lloyd drehte, folgten 43 weitere Filme. MacDonald und Lloyd waren sich einige Jahre zuvor begegnet, als Lloyd als Statist arbeitete und MacDonald ihm dringend benötigte Arbeit verschafft hatte. Dasselbe tat er mit Hal Roach, die beide in kleinen Rollen in „The Patchwork Girl of Oz“ zu sehen waren, bei dem MacDonald 1914 Regie führte. Als Roach sein eigenes Studio gründete und Lloyd als Hauptattraktion präsentierte, engagierte er MacDonald als Regisseur. 1918 gab MacDonald, der zu einem der beliebtesten Charakterdarsteller Hollywoods werden sollte, die Regiearbeit auf und widmete sich fortan ganz der Schauspielerei, vorwiegend in Western und irischen Komödien. Seine erste Zusammenarbeit mit Regisseur John Ford fand 1919 in „A Fight for Love“ statt. Insgesamt besetzte Ford MacDonald zwischen 1919 und 1950 in 25 Filmen. Mit seiner Stimme, die perfekt zu seiner Persönlichkeit passte, gelang MacDonald der Übergang zum Tonfilm mühelos, ohne dass seine schauspielerische Leistung merklich nachließ – im Gegenteil, sie stieg sogar an. So wirkte MacDonald beispielsweise 1931 in 14 Filmen mit – darunter die erste Verfilmung von „Der Malteser Falke“, in der er „Detective Tom Polhaus“ spielte – und 1932 in 22. Obwohl er unter anderem Arbeiter, Polizisten, Soldaten und Priester verkörperte, waren seine Rollen meist mehr als nur Nebenrollen. Seine Figuren hatten in der Regel Namen, und er wurde meist im Abspann als Mitwirkender genannt. Ein Höhepunkt dieser Zeit war seine Darstellung des Landstreichers „Mr. Tramp“ in „Our Little Girl“ (1935) mit Shirley Temple.
