Ray Elgin Teal (12. Januar 1902 – 2. April 1976) war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler. Seine bekannteste Rolle war die des Sheriffs Roy Coffee in der Fernsehserie Bonanza (1959–1972). Dies war nur eine von Dutzenden Sheriff-Rollen in Film und Fernsehen, die er während seiner langen und erfolgreichen Karriere von 1937 bis 1970 verkörperte. Er spielte in Filmen wie „Western Jamboree“ (1938) mit Gene Autry, „Die besten Jahre unseres Lebens“ (1946) mit Fredric March und Myrna Loy, „Der schwarze Pfeil“ (1948), Billy Wilders „Reporter des Himmels“ (1951) und „Das Urteil von Nürnberg“ (1961) mit Spencer Tracy und Burt Lancaster. Teal wurde in Grand Rapids, Michigan, geboren. Er spielte Saxophon und verdiente sich sein Studium an der University of California, Los Angeles, als Bandleader, bevor er Schauspieler wurde. Seine längste Rolle war die des Sheriffs Roy Coffee, eines Gesetzeshüters in der Serie „Bonanza“. Teal gehörte zu den dienstältesten Mitgliedern des Teams mit einer festen Rolle. Er spielte auch einen Sheriff in Billy Wilders Film „Reporter des Teufels“ (1951). Im Laufe seiner Karriere wirkte Teal in zahlreichen Westernserien mit: fünfmal in „Cheyenne“, viermal in „Der Lone Ranger“, einmal in „Die Alaskaner“, dreimal in verschiedenen Rollen in der Westernserie „Wagon Train“, in „Tales of Wells Fargo“ (NBC), in der Westernserie „Broken Arrow“ (ABC), fünfmal in der Westernkomödie „Maverick“ (ABC), in der Westernserie „The Texan“ (CBS), in der Westernserie „The Californians“ (NBC), zweimal in „Colt .45“, einmal in „Wanted: Dead or Alive“ und als „Sheriff Clay“ in einer Folge der Westernserie „Riverboat“ (NBC) aus dem Jahr 1960 sowie viermal in der Westernserie „Wide Country“ über Rodeos. Nach über 15 Jahren als Film- und Fernsehschauspieler ergatterte Teal eine wiederkehrende Rolle als Polizist in der ABC-Sitcom „Where's Raymond?“ (1953–1955), die später in „The Ray Bolger Show“ umbenannt wurde. 1955 verkörperte Teal den skrupellosen Viehbaron McCanles in der Folge „Julesburg“ der ABC/Warner Bros. Westernserie „Cheyenne“. Insgesamt war Teal fünfmal in „Cheyenne“ zu sehen. Später hatte er einen Gastauftritt in der ABC/Warner Bros. Westernserie „The Alaskans“. Von 1957 bis 1962 spielte Teal dreimal verschiedene Rollen in der Westernserie „Wagon Train“. Außerdem wirkte er in mehreren Folgen von „Bat Masterson“, einer Folge von „The Rifleman“ und später in „Green Acres“ mit. 1957 spielte Teal den Gesetzeshüter Captain McNelly in der Folge „Sam Bass“ der NBC-Serie „Tales of Wells Fargo“. Ebenfalls 1957 war er als Fenster in der Folge „Die Kopfgeldjäger“ der ABC-Westernserie „Broken Arrow“ zu sehen. 1958 hatte Teal einen Gastauftritt in der Folge „Keine Tränen für die Toten“ der CBS-Westernserie „The Texan“. Später wirkte er auch in der CBS-Sitcom „Dennis, der Quälgeist“ mit. 1960 übernahm Teal die Rolle des Sheriffs Roy Coffee in „Bonanza“, die er bis 1972 in 98 Folgen verkörperte, gelegentlich auch als Hauptfigur. Außerdem spielte er den Richter, Zahnarzt und Schuhmacher H.G. Cogswell in „Bat Masterson“ mit Gene Barry in der Hauptrolle. Er starb am 2. April 1976 im Alter von 74 Jahren in Santa Monica, Kalifornien, aus unbekannten Gründen.
