Fred „Snowflake“ Toones war ein Charakterdarsteller, der zwischen 1928 und 1951 in über 200 Filmen mitwirkte. Er arbeitete häufig für Republic Pictures und war in etwa 40 Filmen des Studios zu sehen. In mindestens sechs seiner Filme spielte er einen Schuhputzer, und Toones betrieb tatsächlich den Schuhputzstand in den Republic Studios. Seinen ersten Auftritt als Gepäckträger hatte er 1932 in „The Hurricane Express“. Er wurde meist auf diese Rolle festgelegt und spielte sie in über 50 Filmen. Darüber hinaus verkörperte er eine Vielzahl anderer Dienstleistungs- und Hausangestelltenrollen, darunter Stallburschen, Hausmeister, Fahrstuhlführer, Kammerdiener, Köche, Hotelpagen, Portiers, Butler und Barkeeper. Wie andere Schauspieler seiner Zeit, beispielsweise Anna May Wong und Franklin Pangborn, ist Toones ein Paradebeispiel für die rassistischen und sozialen Stereotypen in der Hollywood-Filmindustrie. Seine Standardcharakterisierung war die eines farbigen Mannes mittleren Alters mit hoher Stimme und kindlichen Manierismen. „Snowflake“ war der Künstlername, unter dem Toones am bekanntesten war, und er verwendete diesen Namen bereits in seinem dritten Film, „Shanghaied Love“ (1931), als Vorspann. Auch in „Shanghaied Love“ und über 35 weiteren Filmen war „Snowflake“ der Name seiner Filmfigur. Er spielte in Filmen wie „Mississippi“ (1935), „Hawk of the Wilderness“ (1938) und „Daredevils of the Red Circle“ (1939) mit Bruce Bennett sowie in zahlreichen B-Western wie „The Lawless Nineties“ (1936) mit John Wayne. Außerdem wirkte er in Dutzenden von Kurzfilmen mit, darunter Columbias „Woman Haters“ (1934) mit den Three Stooges, und hatte eine kleine Rolle in Laurel und Hardys Klassiker „Way Out West“ (1937). Toones ist auch ein bekanntes Gesicht in vier Komödien von Preston Sturges: „Twentieth Century“ (1934), „Remember the Night“ (1940), „Christmas in July“ (1940) und „The Palm Beach Story“ (1942). Er starb am 13. Februar 1962 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, USA.
