Après une période difficile de sécheresse, Willie et sa femme Missie ont une vie heureuse, entourés de leurs enfants et amis. Missie reçoit avec joie la visite de son père, qui vient leur apporter de l'aide pour le bétail. Mais ces retrouvailles sont brutalement perturbées par le décès soudain de Kathy, le bébé de la famille. Bouleversée par ce drame, Missie doit abandonner son poste d'institutrice, obligeant Willie à accepter celui de shérif proposé par le maire Doros, un homme dépourvu d'humanité et avide de pouvoir...
