The Phenix City Story (1955)
D'après des faits réels. Au début des années 50, Phenix City, en Alabama, jouit d'une sinistre réputation. La proximité du cantonnement militaire de Fort Benning, dans la Georgie voisine, en fait un haut lieu de la pègre. Seuls quelques habitants osent encore s'opposer à son tout puissant patron, Rhett Tanner. Parmi ceux-ci, Ed Gage, Hugh Bentley et Hugh Britton qui tentent de rallier à leur cause, un avocat respecté mais prudent, Albert L. Patterson, par ailleurs un vieil ami de Thanner. Patterson refuse de s'engager de quelque côté que ce soit, puis reçoit son fils, lui même avocat, John, de retour d'Allemagne, où il eut affaire aux criminels de guerre nazis. John découvre que la démocratie peut être gangrenée de l'intérieur par la corruption et prend fait et cause pour le comité des citoyens. Il s'insurge, mais les rares citoyens honnêtes le payeront très cher. Il devra faire appel à l'armée et à la loi martiale...
