En 1872, Isabel Archer, une jeune Américaine, va rendre visite à ses cousins anglais, les Touchett. Elle les surprend par sa liberté de ton et, surtout, par son esprit indépendant. C'est ainsi qu'elle refuse successivement les propositions de mariage pourtant financièrement fort avantageuses de lord Warburton et de Caspar Goodwood, un richissime admirateur qui a traversé l'Atlantique pour déposer son amour et sa fortune à ses pieds. Isabel a d'autres centres d'intérêt. Elle ne comprend pas très bien Serena Merle, une belle compatriote qu'elle a rencontrée chez monsieur Touchett, mais tombe sous le charme de sa grâce et de son élégance. A la mort de monsieur Touchett, le fils du défunt, Ralph, a soin de léguer à Isabel une confortable rente...
