Frontière chinoise (1965)
Une horde de barbares chinois sillonne la frontière sino-mongole où, en 1935, une mission américaine dirigée par six femmes est installée. L'arrivée d'une autre femme, la doctoresse Cartwright, bouleverse leur vie d'une étrange banalité. Cette intruse choque par son irrespect des règles, elle surprend par son efficacité lorsque sévit une épidémie de choléra et révèle les tempéraments profonds de ceux qui la jugent.
