Anne Bancroft (née Anna Maria Louisa Italiano ; 17 septembre 1931 – 6 juin 2005) était une actrice américaine. Reconnue pour son talent et sa polyvalence, elle a reçu un Oscar, trois BAFTA, deux Golden Globes, deux Tony Awards, deux Primetime Emmy Awards et un prix au Festival de Cannes. Elle est l'une des 24 seules comédiennes à avoir remporté la Triple Couronne d'interprétation. Anne Bancroft, née Anna Maria Louisa (ou Luisa) Italiano le 17 septembre 1931 dans le Bronx, à New York, était la cadette de trois filles. Sa mère, Mildred (née Di Napoli), était opératrice téléphonique, et son père, Michael G. Italiano, était modéliste. Les noms de famille de ses parents étaient des toponymes. Ses parents étaient des immigrants italiens originaires du sud de l'Italie. Dans une interview, elle a déclaré que sa famille était originaire de Muro Lucano, dans la province de Potenza. Elle a été élevée dans la foi catholique. Bancroft a grandi à Little Italy, dans le quartier de Belmont, dans le Bronx. Elle a fréquenté l'école publique n° 12, puis a déménagé au 1580, avenue Zerega. Ses débuts à Broadway dans la pièce à deux personnages « Two for the Seesaw » (1958) lui ont valu une reconnaissance internationale pour l'étendue de son talent et un Tony Award de la meilleure actrice dans un second rôle. Elle a remporté l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice pour son interprétation d'Annie Sullivan dans « The Miracle Worker » (1962) et a été nommée dans la même catégorie pour son rôle de Mme Robinson dans « The Graduate » (1967). Bancroft a poursuivi une brillante carrière au cinéma et à la télévision. Elle a joué dans plusieurs autres films, dont « Elephant Man » (1980), « 84 Charing Cross Road » (1987) et « Agnes of God » (1985), pour lequel elle a été nommée à l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice. Elle a également tenu un rôle récurrent dans la série télévisée « Modern Family ». Bancroft a été mariée au réalisateur Mel Brooks de 1964 jusqu'à sa mort en 2005. Ils ont eu un fils, Max Brooks.
