Biographie:

Né le 12 avril 1940 à Chicago, Herbert Jeffrey Hancock est un pianiste, claviériste et compositeur américain de jazz, l'une des figures les plus influentes de la musique du XXe siècle. Enfant prodige, il interprète un concerto de Mozart avec le Chicago Symphony Orchestra à onze ans. En 1963, il intègre le second grand quintet de Miles Davis aux côtés de Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter et Tony Williams, expérience fondatrice qui redéfinit les codes du jazz. En parallèle, il signe chez Blue Note Records et publie des albums devenus référentiels : *Takin' Off* (1962), *Maiden Voyage* (1965) et *Empyrean Isles* (1964). Dans les années 1970, il embrasse le jazz-funk avec *Head Hunters* (1973) et son tube *Chameleon*, puis révolutionne à nouveau les codes avec *Rockit* (1983), pionnier du scratch en musique populaire. Il remporte un Oscar pour la bande originale du film *Autour de minuit* (1986) et cumule quatorze Grammy Awards, dont l'Album de l'Année pour *River: The Joni Letters* (2007). Ambassadeur de bonne volonté de l'UNESCO depuis 2011, il reste une figure cardinale de la musique mondiale.
