Caryn Elaine Johnson, dite Whoopi Goldberg, est une actrice, humoriste et productrice américaine, née le 13 novembre 1955 à New York. Si elle débute dans le film Citizen: I'm Not Losing My Mind, I'm Giving It Away en 1982, c’est avec La Couleur pourpre de Steven Spielberg, sorti en 1985 et qui lui vaudra une nomination aux Oscars, qu’elle deviendra mondialement connue. S’ensuivent alors pour elle de nombreux films à succès, qui marqueront les décennies tels que: Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986), Fatal Beauty (1987), Ghost (1990), La télé lave plus propre (1991), Sister Act (1992), The Player (1992), Sarafina (1992), Sister Act, acte 2 (1993), Made in America (1993), mais aussi Corrina, Corrina (1994), Bogus (1996), L'Associé (1996), Le Chevalier hors du temps (1998), Sans complexes (1998), Aussi profond que l'océan (1999) ou encore Une vie volée (1999), mais aussi des films cultes: Kingdom Come (2001), Monkeybone (2001) et Cash Express (2001). Dès huit ans, Whoopi Goldberg monte sur scène pour jouer du théâtre. N'aimant pas les cours, elle décide d'aller travailler. Elle enchaîne plusieurs petits boulots dont maquilleuse dans un funérarium, maçonne, ou encore caissière de banque. Elle prend le nom de scène de Whoopi Goldberg. Le surnom Whoopi fait référence à un Coussin péteur (whoopee cushion en anglais): «Quand on se produit sur scène, on n'a jamais vraiment le temps d'aller aux toilettes et de fermer la porte. Donc, si vous êtes un peu gazeux, vous devez laisser tomber. Alors les gens me disaient: “Tu es comme un coussin whoopee”. Et c'est de là que vient le nom.» C'est en 1983 que commence sa vraie carrière en tant que comédienne. The Spoke Show sera sa première pièce. Elle recevra d'ailleurs un Grammy Award pour ce spectacle, deux ans plus tard.
