Pat O’Brien (né le 11 novembre 1899 à Milwaukee, Wisconsin ; décédé le 15 octobre 1983 à Santa Monica, Californie ; de son vrai nom William Joseph Patrick O’Brien) était un acteur américain d’origine irlandaise, ayant notamment joué aux côtés de James Cagney et Spencer Tracy. O’Brien se lia d’amitié avec Spencer Tracy à l’école. Tous deux souhaitaient initialement devenir prêtres, mais s’inscrivirent ensuite à l’Académie militaire de Marquette. Ils finirent par se tourner vers le théâtre. Il joua notamment à Broadway. Un de ses plus grands succès fut la pièce *The Front Page* de Ben Hecht, dans laquelle il interpréta le rôle de Walter Burns. Lorsque la pièce fut adaptée au cinéma par Lewis Milestone en 1931, sous le même titre, Adolphe Menjou incarna Burns, et O’Brien interpréta le rôle d’Hildy Johnson. Ce rôle marqua le début de sa carrière d’acteur. … Si O’Brien interprétait généralement l’ami du protagoniste dans les grands films, il tenait souvent lui-même le rôle principal dans les films plus modestes. Il interprétait fréquemment ses rôles avec un accent irlandais, qu'il ne parlait pas dans la vie. Bien qu'il ait renoncé à devenir prêtre catholique, il portait souvent la soutane dans ses films. L'exemple le plus célèbre est le film culte de Michael Curtiz, *Chicago*, où il apparaît aux côtés de James Cagney dans le rôle du Père Connelly. O'Brien a partagé l'écran avec Cagney à huit reprises dans les années 1930, et leur dernier film ensemble, *Ragtime* (1981), a marqué leur première collaboration en quarante ans. Cagney et O'Brien se sont rencontrés en 1926 et sont restés amis toute leur vie. Dans les années 1950, les propositions de films se sont raréfiées pour O'Brien, qui a dû se concentrer sur la télévision. Son vieil ami Spencer Tracy a eu beaucoup de mal à lui obtenir un second rôle dans son film *The Last Hurrah*. L'un de ses rares succès durant cette période fut la comédie de Billy Wilder, *Certains l'aiment chaud*, où – comme dans beaucoup d'autres films – il incarnait un commissaire de police qui dominait les dix premières minutes de ce classique, avant de n'apparaître que deux fois de façon mineure. O'Brien continua à jouer jusqu'à peu avant sa mort et totalisa près de 150 apparitions au cinéma et à la télévision.
