Il naît sous le nom d'état civil de Daniel Michael DeVito, Jr. le 17 novembre 1944 à Neptune Township dans le New Jersey, de Julia et de Daniel Michael DeVito, Sr. Il est d'ascendance italienne et albanaise et a été élevé selon le rite catholique à Asbury Park.
