Alex e suo padre Buddy, grandi appassionati di baseball, sono devoti sostenitori dei Tiger di Detroit, anche ora che i loro beniamini stanno annaspando. Il giocatore preferito di Alex è la star Billy Young, che sta affrontando la sua ultima stagione prima di ritirarsi definitivamente. Quando Buddy muore improvvisamente, non senza aver prima raccomandato al figlio di non perdere mai la speranza, Alex decide di assistere a tutte le partite della sua squadra del cuore: ogni volta che le cose si mettono male, chiude gli occhi e spera, e subito la fortuna torna a girare. Ma c'è un prezzo da pagare: il ragazzino non può più mancare a un incontro, pena la sconfitta...
