Daniel (Mel Gibson) è un pilota dell'aviazione USA che, nel 1939, già anno di guerra in Europa ma non ancora per gli americani, vive spensierato tra le acrobazie dei voli di collaudo e il profondo amore per la fidanzata Helen (Isabel Glasser.) Ma, proprio il giorno in cui sta per chiederla in sposa, il suo cuore viene spezzato per sempre dall'incidente stradale che precipita la ragazza in un coma irreversibile. Il miglior amico di Daniel, Harry, è uno scienziato che sta sperimentando in gran segreto per conto delle forze armate la possibilità di ibernare esseri viventi. Ha provato la sua macchina sugli animali e ora sta per andare oltre. Daniel disperato e senza più niente da perdere, si offre come cavia umana pur di non dover assistere alla morte dell'amata.
