Sebbene la sceneggiatura di Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, assidua complice della ditta Merchant-Ivory, ricuce i due romanzi per far posto a Newman (sotto le righe), il film è soprattutto il ritratto di Mrs. Bridge (Woodward, squisita): suo è lo struggente finale.
