Dopo essere stato espulso dalla Royal Academy of Sciences per aver condotto esperimenti scientifici non autorizzati, il giovane Edward apprende dall'avvocato Utterson e dal dottor Lanyon, suoi tutori, di essere figlio del defunto dottor Henry Jekyll. Deciso a riabilitare la memoria del tanto bistrattato padre, Edward ne riprende gli studi sulla natura dell'animo umano senza, tuttavia, conseguire risultati incoraggianti. Poiché gli esperimenti coincidono con una improvvisa serie di brutali delitti, il giovane viene ben presto accusato di essere un maniaco assassino. Rinchiuso nella clinica per malati di mente del dottor Lanyon, Edward riesce a fuggire e scopre che il responsabile delle uccisioni è proprio l'insospettabile Lanyon, che ha ordito il complotto per impossessarsi della cospicua eredità di Jekyll.
