Una banda di violenti ha un grande piano: svaligiare il caveau del casinò Riviera di Las Vegas proprio nella serata in cui vi si tiene l'annuale concorso tra imitatori di Elvis Presley.Il capo della banda è Murphy (Kevin Costner), pazzoide violento, convinto di essere uno dei due figli illegittimi di Elvis Presley. Michael (Kurt Russell) è un professionista del crimine appena uscito di galera ed ha appuntamento con Murphy e la sua banda in una sperduto Motel nel deserto del Nevada. Qui, mentre aspetta, conosce Cybil (Courteney Cox), una madre single finita chissà come a vivere in quell'angolo sperduto, e il suo bambino, dotato di una spiccata tendenza al furto.
