Conflitto di interessi (1998)
A Savannah (Georgia) un avvocato di successo (Branagh) passa un'imprudente notte d'amore con una cameriera (Davidtz), si lascia coinvolgere nella vita di lei e negli ambigui rapporti con il padre (Duvall), mette a repentaglio reputazione e figli, aggredisce, uccide finché scopre di essere stato usato. Da un soggetto originale di John Grisham, sceneggiato con uno pseudonimo (Al Hayes) dietro il quale probabilmente si nasconde il regista. Storia di una rovinosa deriva, iniziata quasi casualmente, il film s'ingorga e perde tensione nella parte finale dello svelamento, ma rimane degno di Altman per le qualità stilistiche di atmosfera (il tifone Geraldo che incombe), descrizione ambientale (il profondo Sud nella fotografia di Changwei Gu), definizione psicologica dei personaggi, rinuncia agli effetti, sotterranea ironia nel raccontare la sproporzione tra causa ed effetti.
