Grandi speranze (1946)
Allevato dalla cupa Miss Havisham, il giovane Pip riesce ad entrare nella migliore società grazie al lascito di uno sconosciuto benefattore. Ritrova qui Estella, conosciuta ai tempi della sua disgraziata infanzia, ma soprattutto scopre chi è il suo angelo custode: un forzato che lui aveva aiutato anni prima. Ancora una volta cerca di soccorrerlo, ma la polizia, allertata da una denuncia, uccide l'uomo. Prima di morire questi rivela a Pip di essere il padre di Estella. Adattamento ammirevole, per sensibilità e finezza, dell'universo dickensiano, dei suoi temi e delle sue atmosfere
