Tom Selznick torna sulle scene dopo 5 anni di assenza. La più grande promessa della musica classica è stato a lungo lontano dai palchi a causa di una clamorosa figuraccia durante l'esecuzione di un brano particolarmente difficile, La cinquette, composta dal suo mentore e maestro, ora deceduto. Per il ritorno di Selznick è stato organizzato un concerto-evento durante il quale il pianista scopre di essere sotto tiro da parte di un cecchino che ha una lunga serie di buone motivazioni per costringerlo tramite la paura della morte ad eseguire alla perfezione un fuori-programma: La cinquette, proprio il brano che non era riuscito mai ad eseguire alla perfezione e dal cui fallimento sembrava non potersi riprendere più.
