Da una storia vera, accaduta in Pennsylvania nel 1966. Un malato di mente rapisce Peggy Ann, una ragazzina di diciassette anni. Durante la prigionia, la ragazza instaura però ben presto un rapporto di simpatia con il suo sequestrore, mosso nel gesto estremo soltanto da un bisogno d'amore. Ma intanto tutta la polizia del paese è sulle tracce di Peggy Ann e del suo rapitore.
