Manuela vive nel villaggio di Calvados sognando il mare, i viaggi e il pirata Mococo che per lei è il simbolo dei suoi poco realistici ideali. Quando la zia Inez le comunica che deve sposare il sindaco Don Pedro, la ragazza rimane assai contrariata, ma si dichiara disposta ad obbedire per coprire i debiti dello zio Simplicio e annullare l'ipoteca che pesa sulla casa. Avendo però ottenuto di fare una gita a Puerto Sebastian, Manuela vi conosce l'attore, illusionista e ballerino, Serafin e si innamora di lui. Quando giungono a Calvados, nel giorno fissato per le nozze, Serafin si finge Mococo, nonostante lui solo sappia che il famoso pirata sia lo stesso Don Pedro. Questi approfitta della mistificazione per far condannare Serafin alla impiccagione. Ma Serafin, alla presenza del viceré e quando il cappio è in attesa di stringere il suo collo, come ultimo desiderio di un condannato ottiene di recitare e ne approfitta per smascherare definitivamente Don Pedro.
