Una legge centrale, varata per arginare la crescita incontrollata della popolazione, permette alle famiglie il concepimento di un solo figlio per nucleo. In questo contesto austero e limitato, sette sorelle gemelle lottano per vivere un’esistenza normale fingendo di essere tutte la stessa persona (una ragazza di nome Karen Settman), e alternandosi nei suoi panni nel mondo esterno per qualche ora a settimana. Alle piccole Lunedì, Martedì, Mercoledì, Giovedì, Venerdì, Sabato e Domenica, allevate dal nonno, è permesso uscire di casa soltanto nel giorno corrispondente al proprio nome, con il divieto assoluto di rivelare il segreto della loro famiglia. Nascoste per sei giorni a settimana, camuffate nelle ore concesse all’esterno, crescono senz’altra compagnia che quella del nonno e delle sorelle, fino a quando una di loro, Lunedì, non sparisce nel nulla. Toccherà alle altre investigare sulla scomparsa della maggiore, anche se questo significa uscire al di fuori del giorno stabilito.
