Susan viaggia con suo padre in Inghilterra per una vacanza. Invitata a un ballo di società, Susan incontra Sir John Ashwood e lo sposa dopo una travolgente storia d'amore. Tuttavia, l'americana Susan non si adatta mai del tutto alla vita come un nuovo membro della nobiltà britannica. Allo scoppio della prima guerra mondiale, Ashwood viene mandato in trincea e non torna più.
