Figlio unico di madre single, J.R. cresce ascoltando alla radio la voce del padre, un dj di New York che ha preso il volo prima che lui dicesse la sua prima parola. Poi anche quella voce scompare. Sarà il bar di quartiere, con l’umanità varia che lo popola, a crescerlo e farne un uomo.
