Kirk Douglas (nato Issur Danielovitch; 9 dicembre 1916 – 5 febbraio 2020) è stato un attore, produttore, regista e autore americano. Cresciuto come Izzy Demsky e cambiò legalmente il suo nome in Kirk Douglas prima di entrare nella Marina degli Stati Uniti durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Durante la sua carriera, Douglas apparve in più di 90 film ed era noto per il suo stile di recitazione esplosivo. Divenne una star internazionale per il suo ruolo da protagonista come eroe pugilato senza scrupoli in Champion (1949), che gli valse la sua prima nomination all'Oscar come miglior attore. Altri primi film includono Young Man with a Horn (1950), Ace in the Hole (1951) e Detective Story (1951), film per il quale ricevette una nomination al Golden Globe come Miglior Attore in un Dramma. Ricevette una seconda nomination all'Oscar per il suo ruolo in The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) e la terza per aver interpretato Vincent van Gogh in Lust for Life (1956), che gli valse una seconda nomination ai Golden Globe. Nel 1955, Douglas fondò la Bryna Productions, che produsse film vari come Paths of Glory (1957) e Spartacus (1960). Ha interpretato i ruoli principali in entrambi i film. Douglas è stato lodato per aver contribuito a rompere la lista nera di Hollywood facendo scrivere Spartacus da Dalton Trumbo con un credito ufficiale sullo schermo. Nel 1963 Douglas fu protagonista della pièce di Broadway One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, una storia che acquistò e poi diede a suo figlio Michael Douglas, che la trasformò in un film vincitore di un Oscar. Come attore e filantropo, Douglas ricevette un Oscar per la carriera e la Medaglia Presidenziale della Libertà. Come autore, scrisse dieci romanzi e memorie. È al numero 17 nella lista dell'American Film Institute delle più grandi leggende maschili del cinema hollywoodiano classico.
