Tony Curtis (3 giugno 1925 – 29 settembre 2010) è stato un attore cinematografico americano la cui carriera si è estesa per sei decenni, ma ha avuto la sua massima popolarità negli anni '50 e nei primi anni '60. Ha recitato in oltre 100 film in ruoli che coprono una vasta gamma di generi, dalla commedia leggera al dramma serio. Negli ultimi anni, Curtis fece numerose apparizioni televisive. Sebbene i suoi primi ruoli cinematografici fossero in parte dovuto al suo aspetto, nella seconda metà degli anni '50 divenne una presenza cinematografica di rilievo e forte. Iniziò a dimostrare di essere un "ottimo attore drammatico", avendo la versatilità per recitare in numerosi ruoli drammatici e comici. Nei suoi primi ruoli recitò in una serie di film "mediocri", tra cui avventure da capaccia, western, commedie leggere, film sportivi e un musical. Tuttavia, quando recitò in Houdini (1953) con la moglie Janet Leigh, "il suo primo successo chiaro", osserva il critico David Thomson, la sua recitazione era migliorata enormemente. Ottenne il suo primo serio riconoscimento come abile attore drammatico in Sweet Smell of Success (1957) insieme al co-protagonista Burt Lancaster. L'anno successivo fu nominato all'Oscar come miglior attore in un altro dramma, The Defiant Ones (1958). Curtis offrì poi quella che molti ritengono la sua migliore interpretazione, in un ruolo completamente diverso, la commedia Some Like It Hot (1959). Thomson lo definisce un "film scandaloso" ed è stato votato il film più divertente della storia da un sondaggio condotto dall'American Film Institute. È interpretato da Jack Lemmon e Marilyn Monroe, ed è stato diretto da Billy Wilder. Seguì la commedia di Blake Edwards Operation Petticoat (1959) con Cary Grant. Erano entrambe "commedie frenetiche" e mostravano "il suo impeccabile tempismo comico." Spesso collaborò con Edwards in film successivi. Il suo ruolo serio più significativo arrivò nel 1968, quando fu protagonista del dramma vero The Boston Strangler, che alcuni considerano il suo "ultimo ruolo importante al cinema". Il ruolo rafforzò la sua reputazione di attore serio con la sua "inquietante interpretazione" del serial killer Albert DeSalvo. Ha preso 30 libbre e si è fatto "ricostruire" il viso con un naso finto per assomigliare al vero DeSalvo. Curtis era padre delle attrici Jamie Lee Curtis e Kelly Curtis dalla sua prima moglie, l'attrice Janet Leigh.
