James Joseph Gandolfini Jr. (18 settembre 1961 – 19 giugno 2013) è stato un attore e produttore statunitense, considerato una delle figure più importanti della televisione contemporanea. Raggiunse la fama internazionale grazie al ruolo di Tony Soprano, il complesso e tormentato boss della criminalità italoamericana protagonista della serie HBO I Soprano. La sua straordinaria interpretazione gli valse tre Primetime Emmy Awards, tre Screen Actors Guild Awards e un Golden Globe, ed è ancora oggi considerata una delle più grandi interpretazioni nella storia della televisione. Parallelamente al successo televisivo, Gandolfini costruì una solida carriera cinematografica. Tra i suoi ruoli più noti figurano Virgil in Una vita al massimo (1993), il tenente Bobby Dougherty in Allarme rosso (1995), il colonnello Winter in The Last Castle (2001) e il sindaco di New York in Pelham 123 - Ostaggi in metropolitana (2009). Apparve inoltre in film come Get Shorty (1995) e prestò la voce al personaggio di Carol in Nel paese delle creature selvagge (2009). Uno dei suoi ultimi ruoli fu quello di Albert in Non dico altro (2013), interpretazione che ricevette ampi consensi dalla critica e gli valse, postuma, numerosi riconoscimenti e candidature. Oltre alla recitazione, Gandolfini lavorò anche come produttore, realizzando documentari e film televisivi, tra cui Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq, Wartorn: 1861–2010 e Hemingway & Gellhorn (2012), per il quale ottenne una candidatura al Primetime Emmy Award come produttore. James Gandolfini morì improvvisamente il 19 giugno 2013 a Roma, all'età di 51 anni, a causa di un infarto. La sua interpretazione di Tony Soprano e il suo contributo al cinema e alla televisione continuano a essere ricordati come una parte fondamentale della storia dello spettacolo contemporaneo.
