Henry Jaynes Fonda (16 maggio 1905 – 12 agosto 1982) è stato un attore americano che ha avuto una carriera che si è estesa per cinque decenni a Hollywood. Fonda ha costruito un'immagine cinematografica forte e affascinante in diversi film oggi considerati classici, vincendo un Oscar come miglior attore su due nomination. Fonda si fece notare presto come attore di Broadway e debuttò al cinema hollywoodiano nel 1935. La sua carriera cinematografica iniziò a prendere slancio con ruoli come la fidanzata di Bette Davis nella sua performance vincitrice dell'Oscar in Jezebel (1938), il fratello Frank in Jesse James (1939) e il futuro presidente in Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), diretto da John Ford. La sua carriera iniziale raggiunse l'apice con la sua interpretazione candidata all'Oscar come Tom Joad ne L'uva dell'ira, che racconta la storia di una famiglia dell'Oklahoma che si trasferì in California durante il Dust Bowl degli anni '30. Più avanti nella sua carriera, Fonda si spostò in ruoli più cupi, come quello del cattivo nell'epico Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), sottovalutato e deludente al botteghino al momento della sua uscita, ma oggi considerato uno dei migliori western di tutti i tempi. Recitò anche in produzioni più leggere come Yours, Mine and Ours con Lucille Ball, ma spesso interpretò anche importanti figure militari, come un colonnello in Battle of the Bulge (1965) e l'ammiraglio Nimitz in Midway (1976). Alla fine vinse l'Oscar come miglior attore alla 54ª edizione degli Academy Awards per il suo ultimo ruolo cinematografico in On Golden Pond (1981), che vedeva anche Katharine Hepburn e sua figlia Jane Fonda, ma era troppo malato per partecipare alla cerimonia. Morì per una malattia cardiaca pochi mesi dopo.
