1867: Nach siebenjähriger Abwesenheit kehrt Jack Sommersby aus dem Bürgerkrieg als gewandelter Mann nach Hause zurück. Tat er sich früher als gewaltbereiter Rowdy hervor, ist er nun ein liebender Ehemann und blühendes Vorbild, der das Dorf mit der Idee, Tabak anzupflanzen, vor dem Untergang retten will. Erste Zweifel an seiner Identität kommen auf. Dann wird Jack Sommersby wegen Mordes verhaftet. Seine Frau Laurel will ihn retten, denn sie weiß, daß er in Wirklichkeit nicht Jack ist.
