Quoyle ist Zeit seines Lebens Außenseiter und die Witzfigur seiner Umwelt gewesen. Auch die Ehe mit Petal, die sich mehr für andere Männer als für ihn interessiert, ist ein Reinfall. Sie betrügt ihn und gibt sich keinerlei Mühe, das zu verheimlichen. Nicht mal seine kleine Tochter Bunny traut ihm irgendwas zu. Doch nach Petals Unfalltod beginnt für Quoyle und seine Tochter Bunny auf der Insel Neufundland ein neuer Lebensabschnitt. Bei seiner Tante lernen sie den Begriff Familie als eine Grundfeste des Lebens erst kennen. Doch reichen eine neue Liebe und ein neuer Job in der rauen Natur Neufundlands, damit Quoyle schließlich zu sich selbst findet?
