'Im Namen des Vaters' erzählt die wahre Geschichte von Gerry Conlon. Gerry schlägt sich im vom Bürgerkrieg gebeutelten Belfast der siebziger Jahre als Kleinkrimmineller durch, sein Hauptinteresse gilt Alkohol und wilden Partys - sehr zum Missfallen seines stillen, kränklichen Vaters Giuseppe Als Gerry Probleme mit der IRA bekommt, schickt ihn sein Vater nach England, wo er sich eines Tages dank seiner Eskapaden zur falschen Zeit am falschen Ort aufhält. Obwohl er unschuldig ist, wird er von der Polizei dazu gezwungen, einen brutalen Bombenanschlag zu gestehen. Als einer der 'Guildford-Vier' wird Gerry - zusammen mit seinem ebenfalls unschuldig verurteilten Vater - zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt.
