Andrew Wyke ist ein reicher englischer Krimiautor. Er lädt Milo Tindle in sein großes Landhaus ein, um eine unangenehme Angelegenheit zu regeln: Milo und die Frau des Schriftstellers haben ein Verhältnis und wollen heiraten. Wyke schlägt ein für alle Parteien vorteilhaftes Vorgehen vor. Doch nachdem sich Milo darauf eingelassen hat, erweist sich der betrügerische Plan als Beginn eines tödlichen Katz-und-Maus-Spiels.
