Viggo Peter Mortensen, Jr. (geb. 20. Oktober 1958) ist ein amerikanisch-dänischer Schauspieler, Dichter, Musiker, Fotograf und Maler. Sein Filmdebüt feierte er in Peter Weirs Thriller Witness von 1985 und trat anschließend in vielen bedeutenden Filmen der 90er Jahre auf, darunter The Indian Runner (1991), Carlito's Way (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), The Portrait of a Lady (1996), G.I. Jane (1997), A Perfect Murder (1998) und A Walk on the Moon (1999). Seinen großen Durchbruch feierte Mortensen 2001 mit der epischen Filmtrilogie Der Herr der Ringe. 2005 wurde Mortensen für David Cronenbergs Krimi A History of Violence von der Kritik gefeiert. Zwei Jahre später erhielt er mit einem weiteren Cronenberg-Film Eastern Promises (2007) eine Oscar-Nominierung für den besten Schauspieler. Andere gut aufgenommene Filme in den letzten Jahren waren Appaloosa (2008) und die 2009 entstandene Verfilmung von Cormac McCarthys Roman The Road. Neben der Schauspielerei beschäftigt er sich auch mit bildender Kunst, Fotografie, Poesie und Musik. Im Jahr 2002 gründete er die Perceval Press, um die Werke von wenig bekannten Künstlern und Autoren zu veröffentlichen. Mortensen ist politisch aktiv. Er kämpfte für Dennis Kucinich bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen 2008 in den Vereinigten Staaten und unterstützte später Barack Obama als Präsidenten. Mortensen hat einen Sohn aus seiner früheren Ehe mit dem Musiker Exene Cervenka.
