Max Wagner (28. November 1901 – 16. November 1975) war ein in Mexiko geborener US-amerikanischer Filmschauspieler, der sich auf die Darstellung kleinerer Rollen wie Schläger, Gangster, Matrosen, Handlanger, Leibwächter, Taxifahrer und Umzugshelfer spezialisierte. Er wirkte in über 400 Filmen mit, meist ohne im Abspann erwähnt zu werden. Klatschkolumnisten der Zeitungen berichteten über seinen Aufstieg vom „Gangster Nr. 4“ ohne Text und ohne Waffe zum „Gangster Nr. 2“ mit Text und Waffe. Wagner war eines von fünf Kindern (alles Jungen) von William Wallace Wagner, einem Zugführer, und Edith Wagner, einer Schriftstellerin, die während der Mexikanischen Revolution für den Christian Science Monitor berichtete. Als er zehn Jahre alt war, wurde sein Vater von Rebellen getötet, und die Familie zog nach Salinas, Kalifornien, wo er John Steinbeck kennenlernte, der ein lebenslanger Freund wurde. Steinbeck orientierte sich bei der Figur des Jungen in seinem Roman „Der rote Pony“ an Wagner. Unter dem Namen „Max Baron“ wirkte Wagner in zahlreichen spanischsprachigen Versionen englischsprachiger Filme mit, die in den Anfängen des Tonfilms üblich waren. Er arbeitete außerdem als Spanischlehrer für andere Schauspieler und war in vielen „Mexican Spitfire“-Filmen mit Lupe Vélez zu sehen, wo er auch Vélez’ spanische Improvisationen auf Obszönitäten überprüfte. Zu den weiteren Serien, in denen Wagner mitwirkte, gehören die Charlie-Chan-Filme und die Tom-Mix-Serien sowie Produktionen der Mascot Pictures Corporation. In den 1940er-Jahren gehörte Wagner zu Preston Sturges’ inoffizieller Stammbesetzung von Charakterdarstellern und wirkte in sechs von Sturges geschriebenen und inszenierten Filmen mit, beginnend mit „The Palm Beach Story“. Während der Dreharbeiten zu „The Mad Doctor“ im Jahr 1940 wurde Wagner im Abspann für die 50.000 Meilen lange Fahrt als Taxifahrer auf dem Studiogelände in Hollywood erwähnt. Seit seinem Auftritt als Taxifahrer in „Charlie Chan in Shanghai“ (1935) wurde er von Produzenten häufig als schlagfertiger oder skrupelloser Taxifahrer besetzt. „Ich wurde vor etwa fünf Jahren als Taxifahrer besetzt“, erzählte Wagner einem Reporter. „Und ich wurde auf diesen Typ festgelegt.“ 1952 begann Wagner im Fernsehen aufzutreten, in Episoden von Serien wie „The Cisco Kid“, „Zane Grey Theater“ und „Perry Mason“, wo er ähnliche Rollen wie im Kino spielte. Er war festes Mitglied der Besetzung der Westernserie „Gunsmoke“ und hatte zwischen 1959 und 1973 fast 80 Gastauftritte. Außerdem wirkte er in zahlreichen Episoden von „The Rifleman“, „Bonanza“, „Cimarron Strip“, „The Wild Wild West“ und „Maverick“ mit, darunter eine Gastrolle in der „Rifleman“-Folge „Blood Brother“ von 1959. Er hatte auch Rollen in der Originalserie „Star Trek“ und in „The Twilight Zone“. Zwischen 1952 und 1974 wirkte er in über 200 Fernsehfolgen mit. Zu Wagners bemerkenswerten Filmrollen zählen eine Nebenrolle in dem Science-Fiction-Klassiker „Invasion vom Mars“ (1953), die Darstellung eines Gangsters im Film-im-Film-Segment von „Bullets or Ballots“ (1936) sowie die Rolle des Stierpflegers in der Laurel-und-Hardy-Komödie „Die Stierkämpfer“ (1945).
