Die Geschichte einer Farmer-Familie aus Oklahoma, die vertrieben wird, weil ihre Farm aus Sicht ihrer Bank keinen Gewinn mehr macht. Die Familie zieht nach Kalifornien, um dort Arbeit zu finden. Arbeit bieten nur kriminelle Großgrundbesitzer, die unter Mindestlohn zahlen und von den örtlichen Polizisten unterstützt werden. Am Ende geht es mehr oder weniger gut für die Familie aus, doch andere sind zum Tode verurteilt.
