Der amerikanische Filmemacher Joel David Coen ist dafür bekannt, gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Ethan Coen Filme zu schreiben, Regie zu führen und zu produzieren. Beruflich sind sie als die Coen-Brüder bekannt. 1984 schrieben und inszenierten die Brüder Blood Simple, ihren ersten gemeinsamen Film. Der Film wurde gut aufgenommen und Joels Regie wurde sowohl bei den Sundance Awards als auch bei den Independent Spirit Awards ausgezeichnet. Die Brüder wurden für ihr Talent anerkannt und für eine Reihe von Preisen und Leistungen nominiert.
