Auf einer Rinderfarm in Montana aufgewachsen. Studium an der Stanford University und der University of Nevada als Ingenieur. Scheiderte als Pilot bei der Armee aus. Tourte als Sattelbronco-Reiter durchs Land. Brüchte sich mit Anfang 20 bei einem Reitunfall das Genick, bemerkte dies aber erst mit über 40. Wurde zusammen mit Tex Ritter bei einem Rodeo im Madison Square Garden in New York für das Broadway-Stück „Green Grow the Lilacs“ ausgewählt, das später als Vorlage für das Musical „Oklahoma!“ diente. Fuhr Taxi in New York, arbeitete dann auf Gästeranches als Cowboy und als Guide auf dem Bright Angel Trail im Grand Canyon. Von Billie Burke mehreren Filmproduzenten empfohlen. Freundete sich mit John Wayne, Howard Hawks und später John Ford an, die ihm alle viele Rollen verschafften. Hinterbliebene: Adoptivtochter Dawn Henry. Todesdatum: 6.
