Douglass Rupert Dumbrille (13. Oktober 1889 – 2. April 1974) war ein kanadischer Schauspieler und einer der kanadischen Pioniere des frühen Hollywood. 1913 erlebte die Filmindustrie an der Ostküste einen Boom, und in diesem Jahr wirkte er in dem Film „Was 80 Millionen Frauen wollen“ mit. Es sollten jedoch weitere elf Jahre vergehen, bis er wieder vor der Kamera stand. 1924 gab er sein Broadway-Debüt und arbeitete mehrere Jahre lang immer wieder am Theater, während er sein Einkommen durch den Verkauf von Autozubehör, Tee, Versicherungen, Immobilien und Büchern aufbesserte. Während der Weltwirtschaftskrise zog Dumbrille an die Westküste der USA, wo er sich auf Nebenrollen an der Seite der großen Stars seiner Zeit spezialisierte. Sein attraktives Äußeres und seine charmante Stimme prädestinierten ihn für Rollen als aalglatter Politiker, korrupter Geschäftsmann, zwielichtiger Sheriff oder skrupelloser Anwalt. Er genoss hohes Ansehen bei den Studios und wurde von Cecil B. DeMille, Frank Capra, Hal Roach und anderen prominenten Hollywood-Regisseuren umworben. Dumbrille, ein Freund des ebenfalls in Kanada geborenen Regisseurs Allan Dwan, spielte Athos in Dwans Verfilmung von „Die drei Musketiere“ aus dem Jahr 1939. Dumbrille wirkte in über 200 Filmen mit und war mit dem Aufkommen des Fernsehens in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren häufig zu sehen. Er verstand es, in Rollen als Bösewicht in Komödien, wie etwa denen der Marx Brothers oder von Abbott und Costello, eine Mischung aus Bedrohlichkeit und Pompösität darzustellen.
