William Goldman war ein US-amerikanischer Romanautor, Dramatiker und Drehbuchautor. Er erlangte in den 1950er-Jahren als Romanautor Bekanntheit, bevor er sich dem Drehbuchschreiben zuwandte. Für seine Drehbücher gewann er zwei Oscars: für den Western „Butch Cassidy und Sundance Kid“ (1969) und für „Die Unbestechlichen“ (1976), der die Geschichte der Journalisten Carl Bernstein und Bob Woodward erzählt, die für die Washington Post den Watergate-Skandal um Präsident Richard Nixon aufdeckten. In beiden Filmen spielte Robert Redford die Hauptrolle. Zu seinen weiteren bekannten Werken zählen der Thriller „Marathon Man“ und der Fantasy-Roman „Die Braut des Prinzen“, für die Goldman beide auch das Drehbuch verfasste. Der Autor Sean Egan bezeichnete Goldman als „einen der populärsten Geschichtenerzähler des späten 20. Jahrhunderts“.
