Der irisch-amerikanische Charakterdarsteller Harry Shannon, geboren und aufgewachsen 1890 auf einer Farm in Michigan, brachte alle Voraussetzungen mit, um eine feste Größe im Western-Genre zu werden. Er begann seine Karriere als Tournee-Darsteller bei verschiedenen Repertoire- und Tourneetheatern und entwickelte sein musikalisches Talent in Zeltshows, Burlesque-Theatern und eingängigen Broadway-Musicals wie „Oh, Kay!“ (1926), „Hold Everything“ (1928), „Simple Simon“ (1931) und „Pardon My English“ (1933). Als Mitglied von Joseph Schildkrauts Hollywood Theater Guild wagte Shannon mit dem Aufkommen des Tonfilms den Sprung ins Filmgeschäft und begann seine Laufbahn mit komödiantischen Kurzfilmen an der Seite von gefeierten Schauspielern wie Bert Lahr, Shemp Howard und Leon Errol. In den 1940er Jahren etablierte sich Shannon im Spielfilmgenre, und obwohl er weiterhin nur eine Nebenrolle spielte, erwies er sich als feste Größe im Western-Genre, wobei er meist als Sheriff oder bodenständiger Vater auf der Seite des Gesetzes stand. In heiteren Unterhaltungsfilmen war er als freundlicher irischer Polizist oder Barkeeper zu sehen. In dem Klassiker „Citizen Kane“ (1941) hinterließ er als Kanes alkoholkranker Vater einen kurzen, aber einprägsamen Eindruck. Seine letzte Rolle war die des Großvaters im Musical „Gypsy“ (1962). Dazwischen spielte er kleinere Rollen in so bekannten Filmen wie „Die Sullivans“ (1944), „Die Jolson Story“ (1946), „Zwölf Uhr mittags“ (1952), „Im Zeichen des Bösen“ (1958) und „Der Freibeuter“ (1958). In Westernserien der 1950er-Jahre wie „Cheyenne“ (1955), „Have Gun – Will Travel“ (1957), „Rawhide“ (1959) und „Rauchende Colts“ (1955) wurde sein rustikales Auftreten immer wieder genutzt. Shannon starb 1964 im Alter von 74 Jahren.
