Ray Milland, eigentlich Reginald Alfred Jones (* 3. Januar 1907 in Cymla Mountain, Neath, Wales; † 10. März 1986 in Torrance, Kalifornien), war ein britischer Schauspieler. Für seine Darstellung eines Alkoholikers in Das verlorene Wochenende erhielt er 1946 den Oscar als bester Hauptdarsteller. Ray Milland begann seine Filmkarriere unter dem Namen Spike Milland 1929 in Großbritannien in dem Stummfilm Piccadill. Bereits im Folgejahr ging er nach Hollywood, wo er zunächst bei MGM unter Vertrag war, so in The Bachelor Father von 1930 und Polly of the Circus aus dem Jahr 1932. Erst mit dem Wechsel zu Paramount Pictures erhielt er größere Rollen. Durch den großen Erfolg der Komödie Das Mädchen, das den Lord nicht wollte aus dem Jahr 1935, wurde Milland zu einem gefragten Darsteller im Genre der Screwball-Komödie. Eine seiner Rollen hatte er 1937 neben Jean Arthur in Mein Leben in Luxus unter der Regie von Mitchell Leisen. In dem Abenteuerklassiker Drei Fremdenlegionäre (1939) von William A. Wellman spielte er neben Gary Cooper eine der Hauptrollen. In den 1940er Jahren spielte Milland in Komödien wie Arise, My Love (1940) und in Abenteuerfilmen wie Piraten im karibischen Meer (1942). Unter der Regie von Fritz Lang war er in dem Agententhriller Ministerium der Angst (1944) zu sehen. Als Schauspieler wurde Milland zunehmend unzufrieden mit den eher seichten Drehbüchern, die man ihm anbot, und nahm daher Billy Wilders Angebot an, in dem Film Das verlorene Wochenende (1945) einen alkoholkranken Schriftsteller zu spielen. Für diese Darstellung erhielt Ray Milland 1946 den Oscar als Bester Hauptdarsteller. Die nachfolgenden Filme, darunter Goldene Ohrringe (1947) an der Seite von Marlene Dietrich, konnten nicht an die Qualität des vorherigen Erfolgs anschließen, und mit dem Ende der Dekade verebbte seine Karriere allmählich. Unter der Regie von Alfred Hitchcock drehte Ray Milland 1953 Bei Anruf Mord, in dem er den verbrecherischen Ehemann von Grace Kelly darstellte. Ab 1955 versuchte sich Ray Milland auch als Regisseur. Er inszenierte den Western Ein Mann allein, bei dem er, wie auch in seinen späteren Regiearbeiten, auch die Hauptrolle übernahm. Weitere selbstinszenierte Filme folgten: Geheimzentrale Lissabon aus dem Jahr 1956, Safeknacker Nr. 1 von 1958, sowie Panik im Jahre Null (1962) und Hostile Witness – Im Netz gefangen (1968). In den 1960er Jahren drehte Milland zweimal unter der Regie von Roger Corman: den Horrorfilm Lebendig begraben (1962), sowie in Der Mann mit den Röntgenaugen (1963). In den 1970er Jahren wirkte Milland in einer Vielzahl von Horror- und Science-Fiction Filmen mit, wie Frogs (1972) oder Das Ding mit den zwei Köpfen (1972), und übernahm Nebenrollen in Filmen wie Gold (1974) an der Seite von Roger Moore sowie Der letzte Tycoon (1976), der Verfilmung von F. Scott Fitzgeralds Der letzte Tycoon durch Elia Kazan. In dem weltweit erfolgreichen Liebesfilm Love Story wirkte er 1970 an der Seite von Ryan O’Neal und Ali MacGraw als vermögender Vater mit. Danach erhielt er u. a. Hauptrollen in Mystery Serien wie Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Night Gallery und trat neben Peter Falk in zwei Folgen der Fernsehserie Columbo auf. In den 1970er Jahren spielte er unter anderem eine Hauptrolle in der Serie Reich und Arm, für die er einen Emmy erhielt.
