Der in Kanada geborene Steve wuchs in Südamerika sowie in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, auf. Als Schauspieler und Autor war er in Film und Fernsehen in wiederkehrenden Rollen in Serien wie *She-Hulk: Attorney at Law*, *Yellowstone*, *P-Valley*, *The Walking Dead*, *Brockmire* und *House of Cards* zu sehen. Zudem wirkte er in zwei HBO-Filmen unter der Regie von Barry Levinson mit: *Wizard of Lies* an der Seite von Robert De Niro und *Paterno* mit Al Pacino. Zu seinen weiteren Filmauftritten zählen Damien Chazelles *First Man*, die *Conjuring*-Reihe (Teil 1–3), *The Hunger Games*, *Birth of a Nation*, *Insidious* (Teil 2 & 3), *The Front Runner* sowie Charlie Days *Fool’s Paradise*. Er fungierte als Head Writer für beide Fernsehserien von Tyler Perry – *House of Payne* und *Meet the Browns* –, wobei er die inhaltliche Verantwortung für über 100 Episoden trug und zwei aufeinanderfolgende NAACP Image Awards in der Kategorie „Beste Comedyserie“ gewann. Er ist Absolvent der North Carolina School of the Arts.
