Kathy Bates ist eine der profiliertesten Nebendarstellerinnen Hollywoods, was sich in ihren drei Oscar und sechs Golden Globe Nominierungen widerspiegelt. Kathy Bates ist vor allen Dingen für die Oscar-prämierte Rolle der psychopathischen Annie Wilkes in Misery zu Ruhm gekommen. Nachdem Kathy Bates sich am Broadway in Stücken wie Fifth of July, Come Back to the Five oder Jimmy Dean Seite an Seite mit Karen Black und Cher einen Namen in der Welt der Schauspielszene gemacht hatte, bekam Kathy Bates ihre erste Filmrolle 1971 in der von Milos Forman inszenierten Komödie Taking Off, für den Kathy Bates ganz nebenbei einen selbstkomponierten Song bei steuerte. Die nächste Rolle Kathy Bates vor der Kamera sollte längere Zeit auf sich warten lassen. 1978 agierte Kathy Bates in Stunde der Bewährung neben Dustin Hoffman. Diese Rollenkonstellation sollte 1990 erneut zusammen in Warren Beatty s Dick Tracy auftreten. Es folgten Rollen in eher kleineren Filmen und Gastrollen in TV-Produktionen, bevor Kathy Bates ihren absoluten Durchbruch 1990 mit der Hauptrolle in der Stephen King Verfilmung Misery feiern konnte. Für diese Rolle wurde sie sowohl mit einem Oscar, als auch einem Golden Globe für die beste weibliche Hauptrolle ausgezeichnet. Somit ist Kathy Bates die erste und bisher einzige Schauspielerin, die beide Preise für eine darstellerische Leistung in einem Horrorfilm erhielt. Weitere wichtige Rollen in Kathy Bates Laufbahn waren 1991 die Hauptrolle neben Jessica Tandy in Grüne Tomaten, 1995 in Stephen Kings Dolores oder zwei Jahre später eine kleinere Nebenrolle in dem James Cameron Klassiker Titanic. 1998 sollte Kathy Bates in Mit aller Macht erneut für den Golden Globe und den Oscar für die beste weibliche Nebenrolle nominiert werden. Ebenfalls erhielt Kathy Bates diese ehrenvollen Nominierungen für beide Preise 2002, für den Film About Schmidt an der Seite von Jack Nicholson. Im jahr 2014 erhielt Kathy Bates den Emmys als beste Nebendarstellerin in einer Miniserie beziehungsweise einem TV-Film für ihre Rolle in der dritten Staffel von American Horror Story.
