Snub Pollard (9. November 1889 – 19. Januar 1962) war ein in Australien geborener Vaudeville-Künstler, der in den 1920er Jahren als Stummfilmkomiker in Hollywood große Popularität erlangte. Geboren als Harold Fraser am 9. November 1889 in Melbourne, Australien, begann er schon in jungen Jahren bei Pollards Lilliputian Opera Company aufzutreten. Wie viele der Schauspieler dieser beliebten Kindertheatergruppe wählte er Pollard als Künstlernamen. Die Kompanie betrieb mehrere sehr erfolgreiche professionelle Kindertheatergruppen, die im späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert durch Australien und Neuseeland tourten. 1908 schloss sich Harry Pollard der Tournee der Kompanie nach Nordamerika an. Nach deren Abschluss kehrte er in die USA zurück. Ab 1915 trat er regelmäßig in nicht im Abspann erwähnten Filmrollen auf. So bemerkt Charles Epting beispielsweise, dass Pollard deutlich in Chaplins Kurzfilm „By the Sea“ von 1915 zu sehen ist. Später behauptete Pollard, Hal Roach habe ihn bei einem Bühnenauftritt in Los Angeles entdeckt. Pollard spielte Nebenrollen in den frühen Filmen von Harold Lloyd und Bebe Daniels. Der langgesichtige Pollard trug einen nach oben gedrehten Kaiser-Wilhelm-Schnurrbart; dies wurde sein Markenzeichen. Lloyds Produzent Hal Roach gab Pollard eine eigene Reihe von Kurzfilmen mit ein oder zwei Akten, in denen er die Hauptrolle spielte. Der bekannteste ist „It’s a Gift“ von 1923, in dem er eine Reihe von Rube-Goldberg-ähnlichen Apparaturen verkörpert, darunter ein Auto, das mit Magnetkraft fährt. Anfang 1923, kurz nach seiner zweiten Heirat, kehrte Pollard mit seiner Frau Elizabeth zurück, um seine Verwandten in Australien zu besuchen. Sein Besuch erregte großes Aufsehen, und er trat in mehreren Kinos auf, um über das Filmgeschäft zu sprechen. Nach seiner Rückkehr in die USA verließ er Roach und schloss sich 1926 dem Low-Budget-Studio Weiss Brothers an. Dort spielte er an der Seite von Marvin Loback eine Art Billigversion von Laurel und Hardy und kopierte deren Gags und Handlungsstränge. Später behauptete Pollard, die Weltwirtschaftskrise habe seine Investitionen vernichtet, und er habe sich nicht an den Tonfilm gewöhnen können. In den 1930er-Jahren übernahm er jedoch kleinere Rollen in Tonfilmkomödien und sorgte in B-Western für komische Einlagen. Pollards Erfolge im Stummfilm-Genre sicherten ihm Engagements in Slapstick-Revivals. Er trat mit anderen Filmveteranen in „Hollywood Cavalcade“ (1939), „The Perils of Pauline“ (1947) und „Man of a Thousand Faces“ (1957) auf. Außerdem war er Mitte der 1940er-Jahre regelmäßig als Nebendarsteller in den Kurzfilmkomödien von Columbia Pictures zu sehen. In seinen späteren Jahren legte er seinen markanten Schnurrbart ab und verdiente sich als meist ungenannter Nebendarsteller eine regelmäßige Filmkarriere. Er spielte kleinere Rollen in unzähligen Hollywood-Spielfilmen und Kurzfilmen, fast immer als unscheinbarer, schüchterner Mann, in der Regel ohne Dialog. Snub Pollard starb am 19. Januar 1962 im Alter von 72 Jahren an Krebs, nach fast 50 Jahren im Filmgeschäft. Er wurde auf dem Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills) beigesetzt. Für seine Verdienste um den Film wurde Pollard mit einem Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame am 6415½ Hollywood Boulevard geehrt.
