Une star de cinéma d'action américaine, un producteur, un écrivain, un artiste martial, un guitariste et un shérif adjoint de réserve. Ceinture noire 7e dan en Aikido, Seagal a commencé sa vie d'adulte en tant qu'instructeur d'Aikido au Japon. Il est devenu le premier étranger à exploiter un dojo d'aïkido au Japon. Il a ensuite déménagé dans la région de Los Angeles, en Californie, où il a fait ses débuts au cinéma en 1988 dans Above the Law. En 1991, il avait joué dans trois films à succès et allait devenir plus célèbre dans Under Siege (1992), où il incarnait l'expert antiterroriste des Navy SEALs Casey Ryback. Cependant, son image s'est ternie lorsque On Deadly Ground (1994, qu'il a réalisé) et Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) ont mal tourné dans les salles. Au cours de la seconde moitié des années 90, il a joué dans trois autres films de théâtre et une vidéo directe Le Patriot. Hormis Exit Wounds (2001) et Half Past Dead (2002), sa carrière s'est déplacée presque entièrement vers des films directement en vidéo (souvent des productions à petit budget et tournées en Europe ou en Asie). Entre 1998 et 2009, il est apparu dans un total de 22 d'entre eux. À 59 ans, il revient enfin sur grand écran en tant que Torrez dans le film Machete de 2010. À partir de 2011, il est actuellement occupé avec la troisième saison de son émission de téléréalité Steven Seagal: Lawman. Seagal est également un artiste d'enregistrement et guitariste et le fondateur de Steven Seagal Enterprises. En plus de ses réalisations professionnelles, il est également connu comme écologiste, militant des droits des animaux et partisan du 14e Dalaï Lama Tenzin Gyatso et du mouvement indépendantiste tibétain.
